We see in Timothy an encouragement for every parent and grandparent to teach their children the scriptures.  God the Holy Spirit declares here that all scripture is edifying for even the young child.  2 Timothy 3: 15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Are You Hungry?

I read that during the days of the Great Depression in this country there was such a famine of bread that families had to go to soup kitchens or bread trucks and wait in long lines in awful conditions just to get enough food for one meal.  They did not have a concern for what the kitchen looked like, or the bread truck, or those who served.  Never did they ever think of not going because the time did not suit them just right.  It was not a concern how far they might have to travel or that they were required to go back time-after-time for each meal.  No.  None of those things mattered for one simple reason: they were hungry.  The only thing that mattered was getting the bread. So it is when God gives a hunger for Christ the Bread (Matthew 5: 6).

A Good Hope

It is only when our Lord in grace and mercy takes away our imaginary strength that we truly look to Him and trust Him. This we do not learn in creeds and confessions of faith. This we are taught by Him in personal relationship in the experience of grace. I only find hope in Him when there is no hope anywhere else. It is easy to learn correct doctrine, but faith, hope, comfort, rest in Christ is a living experience. Justification, redemption, atonement, sanctification and glorification are not only doctrinal truths believed in the heart, they are truths experienced in the heart in regeneration. Our Lord is our life, and all that is in Him is ours. There is no hope in what I know, my only hope is in Him and what He has done. May God in mercy shut us up to Christ alone!                                                       Tommy Robbins

                                          When He is Nothing

For if any man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself- Galatians 6:3

If we can learn that we are NOTHING, then we have learned something. But if we think we are something, then we have learned nothing. Scripture says so. Scripture says if we think ourselves to be something when (we) are nothing we are deceived. In other words, we are not special, unique, invaluable nor irreplaceable (in spite of what our mothers may think.) Each of us is just one sinful human being among billions of others just like us. We are born sinful, rebellious, ignorant and totally dependent upon the grace and mercy of God to teach us, change us, and give us any value or worth in this life. Apart from God's revealing, teaching grace we know nothing. Apart from God's constraining grace we can do nothing. Apart from God's keeping grace we will amount to nothing.

Matthew Henry once said, "Since God made everything out of nothing, if he is going to use us, we are going to have to be nothing.  God made everything from nothing, that way he gets all the glory. There were no natural materials to work with, no means to use which could share in His creative glory. He simply spoke everything into existence. So it is in salvation. God finds nothing in the sinner to work with. No faith, no knowledge, no mind or heart to seek Him, so He simply must speak (by His Word) our salvation into existence. He must simply (yet powerfully) command us to hear, see, repent, come, LIVE! God gets all the glory!

There was nothing to work with and no one helped Him in the work of our salvation. If any think they made a decision, let God into their heart, made Jesus lord, accepted him as savior, that person DECEIVETH HIMSELF. One more time, For by GRACE ARE YE SAVED through faith; and that NOT OF YOURSELVES: IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD. (Ephesians 2:8)

LEAVEN

Matthew 13: 33

The Kingdom of Heaven is Like Unto Leaven

Leaven is used to describe the kingdom of heaven because of the effect it has within the dough--it changes the nature of it.  In other places in scripture leaven describes the effect evil has in the world and in the sinner.  Here leaven describes the good effect the gospel has in the heart of one born of God and in the kingdom of heaven.

Which a Woman Took

Christ is the Husband, the Head of the house. The church is the woman who serves Christ, like the woman serves her husband in the kitchen.  The woman is the weaker vessel which may represent the Lord's preachers (2 Corinthians 4:7).

Put Into Three Measures of Meal

The Lord has described the believer as "seed" then "wheat" now "meal."  We are born into this world with a heart of stone like a kernel of wheat or corn.  Put yeast into a bowl of corn kernels and nothing will happen. The hard heart must be ground like meal.  It must be made new by the Spirit of God so like dough the new heart is soft and able to be kneaded.  Put leaven in dough and it makes the whole nature of the dough new.  The leaven is the gospel of Christ.  When Christ enters the heart, the believer is made a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5: 17-18; 1 Corinthians 1: 5-9, 30-31; 1 John 2: 20).  Old things are passed away, all things are become new.  Christ the Word is the leaven which is put into the believer that makes all things new (1 John 2: 24).

Till

Through the gospel the leaven is put into the hidden man of the heart.  As we continue to hear of Christ the leaven keeps growing us up into Christ in all things until one day he will raise us perfectly conformed to his image.
