SUNDAY’S READING IN PROVERBS

Proverbs 6: 27: Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? 28: Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? 29: So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent. 30: Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; 31: But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house. 32: But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. 33: A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. 34: For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. 35: He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

ONE THING

By Pastor Drew Dietz

One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” (Psalms 27: 4).

If a person has seen the beauty and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ high, holy and lifted up in the righteousness of His person; spoken of in that one and only Gospel of the grace of God; then and not until then will he have this ‘one’ desire! We may have many issues, many causes and many ‘other’ seemingly important stands of the day; but once enlightened to the absolute freeness and sovereign mercy of God in the face of Jesus Christ, we will not be to taken up with all these ‘things’ of the moment. Mary seemed to understand this when our Lord said HIMSELF that she had chosen that ONE thing needful. Make no mistake concerning this: if we can be continually infatuated with the ‘things’ of this world over and above that one ‘thing’ needful it is perhaps that we have never truly seen the beauty that bespeaks of all the redemptive and glorious workings of Christ on our behalf.

FREEDOM AND LIBERTY IN CHRIST
By Pastor Tom Harding

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2 Cor. 3:17).

Paul encourages all believers to stand fast in the liberty and freedom we enjoy in the Lord Jesus Christ. "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke  of bondage." (Gal. 5:1).

Consider these brief thoughts on the believer's freedom in Christ…

1). In the gospel of Christ there is the Spirit of illumination in our heart and freedom from darkness. "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." (John 8:12). "Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son" (Col. 1:13).

2). In the gospel Christ there is the Spirit of regeneration in our heart and freedom from the bondage of sin. "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed (John 8:32,36).

3). In the gospel of Christ there is the Spirit of redemption in our heart and freedom from the curse and penalty of sin. "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree (Gal. 3:13).

4). In the gospel of Christ there is the Spirit of Comfort in our heart, and freedom from fear and wrath; "But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine" (Isa. 43:1).

5). In the gospel of Christ there is the Spirit of adoption in our heart and the freedom of a child to come unto his loving Father. "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Heb. 4:16).

6). In the gospel of Christ there is the Spirit of love shed aboard in our heart (Rom. 5:5), and freedom to serve Him not out of fear of punishment, or threat of the Law, but with a generous spirit of thanksgiving; (Psalm 103:1) "The love of Christ constraineth us" (2 Cor. 5:14).

LIBERTY!

By Robert Hawker

2 Corinthians 3:17: Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

What liberty, my soul! art thou brought into by thine adoption into the family of God in Christ? Not from the assaults of sin; for thou still carriest about with thee a body of sin, under which thou groanest. Not from the temptations of Satan; for he is still levelling at thee many a fiery dart. Not from outward troubles; for the world thou art still in, thou findest it a wilderness state. Not from inward fears; for thine unbelief begets many. Not from the chastisement of thy wise and kind Father: for then many a sweet visit of his love, under the rod, would be unknown. Not from death; for the stroke of it thou must one day feel—though, blessed be Jesus, he hath taken out the sting in his blood and righteousness.

What liberty then is it, my soul, thou enjoyest? What hath the Spirit of the Lord, as a spirit of revelation, discovering to thee the glory of Jesus, and thy interest in him, brought thee into? Oh, who shall write down the vast, the extensive account of thy freedom? Say, my soul, hath not the sight of God's glory in Christ freed thee from the curse of the law,—from the guilt of the law,—from the dominion of sin,—from the power of Satan,—from the evil of unbelief in thine own heart,—from the terrors of justice,—from the alarms of conscience, from the second death? Say, my soul, doth not the sight of Jesus dying for thee, rising for thee, pleading for thee, enlarge thine heart, and lose thy bonds, and shake off all thy fetters and all thy fears? Doth not Jesus in the throne give thee liberty to come to him, to call upon him, to unbosom thyself unto him, to tell him all thy wants, all thy necessities, and to lean upon his kind arm in every hour of need? Shout, my soul! and echo to the apostle's words,—"Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty:" liberty to approach, liberty to plead, liberty to pray, liberty to praise and to adore the whole persons of the Godhead, for having opened the prison-doors, and given thee freedom in Christ Jesus!

SURE MERCIES

Isaiah 55: 3: Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

Every promise God makes to his child in the everlasting covenant are sure mercies. God promises:

·        To cleanse us (Eze 36: 24-25)

·        To give a new heart and new spirit (Eze 36: 26)

·        To cause us to walk after him (Eze 26: 27)

·        To save us from uncleanness by making us fruitful (Eze 26: 29-30)

·        To make us loathe our sin (Eze 36: 31)

·        To write his laws on our hearts (Jer 31: 33)

·        To be our God (Jer 31: 33)

·        To make us know him more and more (Jer 31: 34)

·        To freely forgive our sin and remember them no more (Jer 31: 34)

·        To make us reverence him forever (Jer 32: 39)

·        To never turn away from us or allow us to turn away from him (Jer 32: 40)

·        To rejoice over us and plant us in his land forever (Jer 32: 41)
