SUNDAY’S READING IN PROVERBS

Proverbs 2: 5: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6: In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Children of Love

“Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end” (John 13:1).

God showed His power in making us creatures, but He showed His love in making us sons. A man may give thanks that God had made him a man rather than a beast, but how much more we ought to praise His glorious name for making us children of love rather than leaving us in our state of sin. When I think of what and where I could be, my heart overflows with gratitude to my Redeemer! Pastor Henry Mahan

PUT OFF THY SHOES!

Our flesh is dying daily.  If we live long enough we will not be able to outwardly do any of the sinful things that we can do in our younger years.  But that is not progress in sanctification.  In fact, it has nothing to do with sanctification.  Sanctification is God giving a new heart by forming Christ in you so that your conscience is purged to rest in Christ as your Sanctifier and your Sanctification.  When a sinner is sanctified he has a new character that desires God to have all the glory!  So he stops looking to himself and his works and looks to Christ alone.  In sanctification, Christ gets all the glory and we get none. The only way any man can argue against this truth is to tread under their feet the Son of God, and count the blood of the covenant wherewith his people are sanctified an unholy thing, while opposing the Spirit of grace. (Heb 10: 29) This is why the Lord told Moses to put off the shoes of his making because we must come only in Christ who shods our feet with the gospel of peace by making his people holy in heart and being that holiness. (Exodus 3: 5; Acts 7: 33; Eph 6: 15; 1 Cor 1: 30-31; Jn 14: 6)

WHERE IS THE FEAR OF GOD TODAY?

Where is the fear of God today? Is this not what is wrong with us? Is not this the whole story? This present generation is so taken up with the idea of our own importance and so occupied with the dignity of man, that we no longer fear God, if we ever feared Him. We are presumptuous, self-willed, unruly and dying a slow but sure death, and on the verge of complete ruin.

If there is one word that describes this generation of religious people, it is “irreverence.” Sophistication will yet kill this present generation. Men go to church today to patronize God, not to worship God. The majority of church-going people, judging from their attitude, believe that in attending church, they are conferring a great honor upon God. Church attendance is an excuse for a fashion parade and a show of pride. Men go to church to be entertained and amused. They insist that the preacher be a good mixer, entertainer, actor, and pulpit clown. The preacher who dares to declare the gospel of Christ is one thought of as one being hopelessly out of date.

I hear everywhere I go this statement, “He sounds like an old country preacher,” whatever that means. Read through the whole sermon in Acts 2; there is nothing in it but the Word of God, not one thing except the Scripture. How embarrassing this man would be to this generation; he would be considered odd. He didn’t even have on a clerical robe. What did he preach? The sovereignty of God, the Lordship of Christ, and salvation by grace. By modern standards, this was a bad sermon; this man preached Divine election. The cry of this religious generation is that you must not preach election—you will confuse sinners. How are you going to confuse sinners when they are already confused? They are dead to God. The result of the preaching in Acts 2 resulted in God calling some, maybe enough to try preaching this way. Pastor Scott Richardson

THREE THINGS REGARDING GOD’S GRACE

Grace is always sovereign. “Therefore, hath He mercy on whom He will have mercy, and whom He will He hardeneth” (Romans 9:18).

Grace is always free. “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).

Grace is always saving. “By grace are ye saved” (Ephesians 2:8).

God’s grace is not an offer up for man’s acceptance or rejection. His grace sovereignly, freely saves! We cannot believe grace without believing these three things regarding grace.  Pastor Todd Nibert

HONOR GOD

Part 1 of 5

(This sermon had an intro with four divisions. I plan to print each section over the next few weeks. This is the introduction.)

1 Samuel 2: 30:…them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

These are the words of the LORD God.  God demands his saints that we honor him by honoring Christ.  Throughout the scriptures, we see God honor those who honor him. The key here is that they each honored God by showing Christ to be all before all in their sphere of influence.

By God’s grace, Abel honored God by believing God and offering unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain. He came in Christ the Lamb.  Likewise, God honored Abel, “He obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.” (Heb 11: 4)

By God’s grace, Noah honored God by resting his entire reputation before men, even his eternal soul, upon the word of God as he prepared an ark according to God’s command. And God honored Noah by saving him, his house and giving him rest.

By God’s grace, Moses honored God by “refusing to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt” (Heb 11: 24-26) And God honored Moses by using him to write the first five books of the bible, in the deliverance of Israel and in the salvation of his soul.

On the contrary, throughout scripture we see God lightly esteem those who despise him.  The key here is that they lightly esteemed Christ before men by choosing what honored their flesh rather than Christ.

Lot was a righteous man, a believer saved by grace. But Lot failed to honor God when he chose the fertile plain of Sodom rather than submitting to Christ by submitting to Abraham. So God lightly esteemed Lot by making him suffer the consequences in his family the rest of his life.

David was a righteous man; the man after God’s own heart.  But in the matter of Uriah, David failed to honor God by honoring the lusts of his flesh. So God lightly esteemed David: by taking his infant child and making the sword to never leave David’s house the rest of his days.

In the context of this scripture, Eli failed to honor God when he failed to sharply rebuke his sons and teach them the sacrifices and offerings are a type of Christ, making them refrain from causing the people to despise the sacrifice. Therefore, God lightly esteemed Eli, making him suffer greatly in his family.

Brethren, we are saved by grace alone by the doing and dying of Christ alone.  But like a faithful father, God will chasten his child to keep us looking only to Christ and to teach us to bear witness of Christ to all in our sphere of influence. So as long as we are passing through this earth, this principle applies in the blatant rejection of all known duty. Those who honor God, God will honor and those who lightly esteem God, God will lightly esteem.
