Joy lies more in the mind than in the place or the possession. He
that hath enough, though he hath but a few shillings a week, hath more than the
possessor of millions. He that is content is the truly rich man!
Charles Spurgeon

Isaiah 57: 15: For thus saith the high and lofty
One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high
and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble
spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the
contrite ones.
O what a mystery that God should have two
dwelling-places! The "heaven of heavens" that "cannot contain
him," and the humble, broken, and contrite heart! But in order that the Lord
of heaven might have a place in which he could live and lodge, God gives to his
people gifts and graces; for he cannot come and dwell in the carnal mind, in
our rebellious nature, in a heart full of enmity and wickedness; he therefore
makes a lodging-place for himself, a pavilion in which the King of glory
dwells, the curtains of which are like the curtains of Solomon. His abode is
that holy, divine nature which is communicated at regeneration—"the new
man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." Thus
Christ dwells in the heart by faith; and is "in his people, the hope of
glory." And this made Paul say, "I am crucified with Christ;
nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I
now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and
gave himself for me." This is the object of God's dealings—that the Lord
God might dwell in his people; that there might be a union betwixt the Church
and her covenant Head: "I in them, and thou in me, that they might be
perfect in one." This is the unfolding of the grand enigma, the solution
of the incomprehensible mystery, "God manifest in the flesh,"—that
the Lord God might dwell in his people; "I will dwell in them, and walk in
them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people;" and thus
glorify himself by filling their hearts with his grace and glory, as Solomon's
temple was of old, and that they might enjoy him, and be with him when time
shall be no more. This is the grand key to all the Lord's dealings with the
soul, and all his mysterious leadings in providence,—that the Lord God might
dwell in the hearts of his people here, and be eternally glorified in them in a
brighter and a better world. JC

ONLY
ONE WAY
There is only one way to heaven. There is only one way of salvation.
There is only one way whereby fallen, depraved, sinful man can approach the
holy, living, almighty God and be accepted of him. The Lord Jesus Christ said,
“I am the Way!” Christ is the Way. There is no other way. If you walk in any
other way, you are going the wrong way, you are in the broad way that leadeth
to destruction. Christ is the Door. You cannot enter into life, but by him.
Christ is the Way. You cannot come to God, you cannot be saved, but by him…There
is no other way. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”
This is the way of salvation. It is unalterable. Trust Christ and you are
saved. If you do not trust Christ alone, you are lost. Salvation can never be
obtained by our works our tears, or our prayers. It can only be obtained
through simple reliance upon the finished work of Christ, the sinner’s
Substitute. In this matter of salvation, Christ is all in all. He is the “A”
and the “Z” in the alphabet of grace. He is the beginning and the ending of
God’s salvation. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he
that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on
him.” (John 3:36). “He that believeth on him is not condemned” (John 3:18), and
shall never be condemned, because he’s passed from death unto life. The way of
salvation is as clear day, as simple as trust, and as straight as an arrow.
Christ said, “I am the Way!” What could be more simple or more direct? Don Fortner, pastor of Grace Baptist Church,
Danville, KY
GOD LOVES SINNERS
God loves sinners. The human mind cannot comprehend the glory of
that statement. Sinners are unlovable.
There is nothing lovely in sinners, so the reason for God’s love cannot
be found in the sinner. The reason for
God’s love must be found in the character of God. God has the capacity to love sinners because
God is love (I John 4:8). God loved
sinners when He elected them in Christ (Deut. 7:7-8). God loved sinners when He promised to send
the Savior of sinners. God loved sinners
when He sent His Son incarnate to be their substitute (I John 4:10). God loves sinners when He calls them by His
grace through the preaching of the gospel (Jer. 31:3). God loves sinners when He causes them to be
born again (Eph. 2:4). God loves sinners
when He implants the fruit of the Spirit in them. God loves sinners when He sees His people
through trials (Heb. 12:6). God loves
sinners when He calls His people home to be with Him.
No sinner would have even one of these
blessings unless God loves sinners.
Thank God that He loves sinners with a love that passes all human
comprehension (Eph. 3:19). Frank Tate, pastor of Hurricane Road Grace Church, Ashland,
KY
THE FORGOTTEN SPARROW
Christ said, “two sparrows are sold for a farthing?” In another
place he said, “Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings.” (Mt 10: 26; Lu
12: 6) Sparrows are so common that if a man buys two farthings-worth then he
gets one thrown in for free. The one thrown-in is not even counted by the
merchant. Believer, do you at times feel like the uncounted, forgotten sparrow?
Yet, Christ says of the sparrow which man forgets, “not one of them is
forgotten before God?” (Lu 12: 6) Believer,
if God does not forget one lowly sparrow, do you imagine God will ever forget
you? Christ speaking through the prophet Isaiah said, “Can a woman forget her
sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea,
they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon
the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.” (Is 49:
15-16) Suppose a mother tends to her little canary in her bird cage, how much
more will she tend carefully and lovingly to her little child in the cradle!
Now, suppose that mother gave her beloved son to die so that her infant child
could live. How much more will she care for that child in the cradle! “He that
spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with
him also freely give us all things?” (Rom 8: 32) Christ promises, “There shall
not an hair of your head perish.” (Lu 21: 18) “Fear ye not therefore, ye are of
more value than many sparrows.” (Mt 10: 31; 1 Pet 5: 7; Ps 34: 6-9)
