THREE LIES

We are not trying to get everyone saved.  We are seeking the Lord’s sheep. Those false preachers whom our Lord describes in his word as hirelings, thieves and robbers, those who have come in sheep’s clothing to steal, kill, destroy, and devour the souls of men, these world religious leaders have told three lies so often, for so long, that they are almost universally received as the truth of God.  We do not follow the cunningly devised fables of men, which declare (1)  “God loves everybody,”(2) “Christ died for everybody,: and (3) “The Lord wants to save, tries to save, and wills the salvation of everybody.”

Those things simply are not so.  The fact is God almighty loves his elect, sent his Son to die for and redeem his elect, and effectually calls his elect to life and faith in Christ by the irresistible grace and omnipotent power of His Spirit. These elect ones are spoken of throughout the Word of God as “his sheep.”                                                                                    Don Fortner, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Danville, KY

Life eternal is not promised to those looking back and reflecting upon their past, looking to their self-righteous acts, as those of Matthew 7:22 for acceptance with God. Life eternal is not promised to those presumptuously looking to the future for a more convenient season as Felix did. But life eternal is promised to all who by faith hear and believe the Lord Jesus today, the I AM, of Whom the Scripture says, “Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else” (Isaiah 45:22).                                                                                     Marvin Stalnaker, pastor of Katy Baptist Church, Fairmont, WV

FOR THE SINS OF THE WHOLE WORLD

The apostle John pointed to Christ saying, “Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (Jn 1: 29) Again, he said, “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” (1Jo 2:2 AV) We know the world does not mean all men in the world because Christ said he only laid down his life for the sheep. He prayed not for the world but for them God gave him. (Jn 10: 15; Jn 17: 9) Those for whom Christ died are redeemed, are reconciled to God, therefore none shall be lost. Christ accomplished eternal redemption for us. He is the propitiation for our sins. So we know the world does not mean all men in the world.

The world means all ages, all times, throughout the world.  Christ is the propitiation for our sins that live in this moment of time, and not for ours only, but for his people in all ages of the world. The point is that no matter the time in which his people live throughout the whole world, Christ is the one Mediator, the one propitiation for our sins. (1 Tim. ii. 5) Christ alone put away the sin of his people—those that died before his coming to those that saw his day to those in our day to those he shall call right at the end of time—so Christ is the one Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.

(Psalms 74:23)  "Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually."

"Forget not..."  If you ever get discouraged, think how the voice of the enemy cries out against God.  Let their curse cause us to trust Him more.  Never look to the enemy to get better.  They will never change.  They go from bad to worse.  Their wickedness grows like these thunderheads that roll before the storm, continually growing and increasing. Milton Howard, pastor of Kitchens Creek Baptist Church, Ball, LA.

NOT PEACE BUT A SWORD

The Lord Jesus says, “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” (Mt 10: 34) He reminds us we are a flock of sheep surrounded by wolves. (Mt 10: 16) We shall be rejected by religion and civilians. (Mt 10: 17-18; Jn 16:2; Is 66:5) He tells us to even expect the sword from our dearest loved ones. (Mt 10: 21, 35-36; Mt 10: 22) The reason is “For my name’s sake.”  The gospel draws a line forcing men to take sides. But division is not the fault of Christ, his gospel or his sheep. It is the fault of those who will not believe. (Col 1: 21; Rom 8: 6-9; Jn 15:24; Mt 10: 24-25) So Christ tells believers to:

1) Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves (Mt 10: 16) Serpents see trouble before trouble sees them. They avoid it. At all times they are near a place of safety which they flee into the moment they see trouble. Christ is our Refuge. Flee to Christ. Also, scripture speaks of “the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear; which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.” (Ps 58: 4-5)  Be extra careful what you hear. There are few men faithful to preach Christ.  Also, be harmless as doves rather than passionate, proud and hurtful. Seek to be helpers rather than hurters. (1 Cor 14:20; 1 Thess 5: 22)

2) Fear them not (Mt 10: 26) God shall reveal and make all things known. Vengeance belongs to God. Wait on him.

3) Speak what Christ teaches (Mt 10: 27) The persecutor’s goal is to silence the gospel. Christ can get the good news to one sitting under false preaching, draw them out and nothing can stop him! So speak everything you know of Christ. Hold nothing back! The gates of hell shall not prevail against Christ and our gospel.

4) Do not fear men, fear God (Mt 10: 28-31) The same sovereign Father who guards the sparrow, guards you who have been called by grace. You are of much more value than the sparrow. The one we obey is the one we reverence and honor. Make sure it is God and not men.

5) Confess, never deny, Christ before men (Mt 10: 32-33) Christ was not ashamed for trusting his Father as he bore the cross. God raised him! (Is 50: 7) If I believe he bore the cross for me then I will not be ashamed to confess him before men. (Rom 10: 11)

6) Do not be drawn away by loved ones (Mt 10: 37-39) The cross of Christ is painful but we must not let even our dearest loved ones come between us and the gospel of Christ. If anything can draw us away from Christ and his body then we are not worthy of Christ. (Heb 3:14; Ja 1:12)

7) Be as our Master (Mt 10: 24-25) These things Christ bore for us for whom he suffered and died. When we are reproached or persecuted in this life for Christ’s name consider it the highest honor, “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake.” (Php 1: 29; Rom 8:17)
