The Preciousness of Christ

1 Peter 2: 7

Nowhere does Jehovah-Jesus appear to the spiritual, believing mind so exalted as when He stoops!—so glorious as when in eclipse!—so holy as when bearing sin!—so loving as when enduring its punishment!—so triumphant as when vanquished upon the cross!

Oh, do not study God in the jeweled heavens—in the sublimity of the mountain—in the beauty of the valley—in the grandeur of the ocean—in the murmurs of the stream—in the music of the winds. God made all this, but all this is not God.

Study Him in the cross of Jesus! Look at Him through this wondrous telescope, and although, as through a glass darkly, you behold His glory—the Godhead in awful eclipse, the Sun of His Deity setting in blood—yet that rude and crimsoned cross more fully reveals the mind of God, more harmoniously discloses the perfections of God, and more perfectly unveils the heart of God, and more fully exhibits the glory of God, than the combined power of ten thousand worlds like this, even though sin had never marred and the curse had never blighted it.

                                                                       Octavious Winslow

I see the greatness of God’s love for me in his Son bearing my sins in his own body on the tree; I see the greatness of God’s justice satisfied toward me in the shameful death of his Son in my place; I see the greatness of God’s everlasting covenant to me in his Son seated victoriously in glory.

***************

What would any husband think who gave a new dress and earrings to his wife only to find her to never stop looking at herself in the mirror rather than at her husband who decked her so fairly!  Let us never become so enamored with the gifts of grace that we cease admiring Christ who dressed us in the finest apparel.

John 6: 59: These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. 60: Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? 61: When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? 62: What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? 63: It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. 64: But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. 65: And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 66: From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67: Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68: Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69: And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

BLESSED PREACHING
Pastor Henry Mahan

Blessed is the preacher who can shut men up to free and sovereign grace and yet lovingly, sincerely invite all men to look to Christ and be saved. Blessed is the preacher who knows that "salvation is of the Lord," who has the patience to wait upon the Lord to regenerate, awaken, and call his hearers; yet he prays for their deliverance, urges them to close with Christ, and beseeches them to "be reconciled to God." Blessed is the
preacher who can preach with equal force and confidence both the preservation and the perseverance of believers. He will not "turn away from us and we will not depart from Him." Blessed is the preacher who can rejoice in imputed righteousness; "with His holy garments on, I am as spotless as His dear Son;" and yet, along with his congregation, hunger and thirst for spiritual growth and personal godliness. Blessed is the preacher who can
find and preach both justification and sanctification at Calvary. We do not go to Calvary for justification and then to Sinai for sanctification; we are "complete in Him." Blessed is the preacher who can preach prophetical truth in such a way that his hearers are looking for the returning Christ and not only the return of Christ. Blessed is the preacher who administers
believers' baptism, presides at the Lord's table, and oversees the business of the Lord's church not according to the "way we do it in our circles and according to our custom and tradition," but according to the Word of God. It may be that if preachers and people return to the Scriptures, someone will ask, "What kind of church is this?" And we can answer, "It is the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, which He loved and purchased with His own blood and of which He is the sole Head."
