FOR THE SCRIPTURE SAITH

Romans 10: 11: For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed

God has recorded in his word what he brings about by his power in his vessels of mercy.  There is no ambiguity here because it is written.   When God brings life and immortality to light through the gospel within his children, the believer shall not any longer be ashamed, confused or uncertain but shall believe and confess that Christ is salvation, without any merit to be added by the believer whatsoever (1 Cor 2: 12).

We are not reading our own fancies into Scripture; we are not using, in allowable freedom, words which had another meaning altogether to adorn our own theology, but we are apprehending the innermost meaning of prophecy, when we see in it Christ and his Salvation (1 Peter 1: 10).                                                               Alexander Maclaren

NO MORE SIN

The Lord Jesus Christ was touched with the feelings of our infirmities. He was made in the likeness of sinful flesh, yet without sin. In a similar way, the child of God, who has a new nature, created in the likeness of Christ, is touched with the feeling of immortality. He is touched with the feeling (desires of the heart) for holiness and righteousness . . . yet without perfection. There is a new man inside, who is perfectly holy, yet there is an old man that keeps us in our imperfect state, subject to (but not under the dominion of) sin. The child of God will not be perfected until He leaves this body of death. His whole being, body, soul and spirit, will not be perfected until he is clothed with immortality. Just as Christ assumed His glorified body and was no longer subject to infirmities, so shall we be clothed with our glorified bodies. What a day that shall be! No more sin!!

THERE IS A SUBSTITUTE

The “good news” of the gospel is that there is a substitute who has stood in the place of every repentant sinner and bore the wrath of God in his place. He did this for all whom the Father had given him from all eternity. It is for them that he prays in John 17. They are “His Sheep.” The Father gave them to him; and he died for them (John 10:15, 29). Substitution is at the very heart of the gospel. Christ did not simply give his life to make salvation possible for those who contribute their part to what he has done by repenting and trusting Christ. He it is that gives repentance and faith (2 Timothy 2:25; Ephesians 2:8). Christ did not say to the religious Jews of his day that they were not of his “sheep” because they did not believe; rather, he says, “Ye believe not because you are not of my sheep.” If they had been his sheep they would have believed. The “good news” is that all whom the Father has given to the Son, and for whom he died will believe and manifest true repentance and faith. This they will do willingly and with gratitude in their hearts. It is God’s work. He cannot fail.                                                                                   Bill Clark
