I. THE BURNT OFFERING TO GOD

Leviticus 16: 23: And Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there: 24: And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place, and put on his garments, and come forth, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people, and make an atonement for himself, and for the people. 25: And the fat of the sin offering shall he burn upon the altar.

A. The burnt-offering was offered on other days, but here, as on those other days the High Priest offering the burnt-offering typifies Christ who offered himself to God.

1. God required of his people perfect obedience, he demanded from us a pure and holy life, faithfulness and thanksgiving and all glory to God.  Christ is that perfect savour unto God.

Hebrews 9: 14:…Christ,…through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God,

2. The fat of the sin offering was burned upon the altar as well.  Fat makes a sweet smell when burned.

Ephesians 5:2: And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

II. THE BURNING WITHOUT THE CAMP

Leviticus 16: 27  And the bullock for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall one carry forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung.

A. Going unto Christ--believing on Christ--requires leaving the camp of carnal religionists, going unto Christ and bearing reproach.

Hebrews 13: 11: For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. 12: Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. 13: Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. 14: For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. 15: By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

B. True holiness--this true separation--from unbelievers, unrighteousness, darkness, Belial, infidels, and idols is through faith in Christ.  It is a fear of God rather than a fear of men.  It is believing God's promises.  It is the evidence of Christ dwelling in you and God making you his people.

2 Corinthians 6: 14: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15: And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16: And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17: Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18: And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. 7: 1: Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

III. THE SURE EFFECTS OF THIS REVELATION IN THE HEART

Leviticus 16: 29: And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you: 30: For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD. 31: It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever.

When God visits his redeemed in the season of his love, he will make you to behold Christ Jesus and--this shall be a statute for ever unto you:

A. V29: ye shall afflict your souls-- and do no work at all--repentance and faith

B. V30: For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.

All the work of the High Priest and in the offerings God declares the acceptance of his people is complete and finished by victorious work of Christ Jesus the Lord.

Christ is the believer's Wisdom--by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many

Christ is the believer's Righteousness--God hath made him sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Christ is the believer Sanctification--both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one.

Christ is the belivers full redemption--we are bought with a price and we are not our own.

C. V31: [Christ] shall be a sabbath of rest unto you

Hebrews 4: 9: There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 10: For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11: Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

May God grant you repentance from working for acceptance with God and rest perpetually in Christ Jesus our Sabbath, in whom the believer is righteous and holy with God.  Atonement has been made!

AMEN!
